LOS ANGELES, CA - Giovani dos Santos led Club America to their second win in the Apertura 2019 after defeating Xolos 3-1.
Once again, Dos Santos had a positive impact for America, coming off the bench after scoring his first Liga MX goal and giving an assist on his debut in the Estadio Azteca.
The former LA Galaxy player had an unforgettable game as he assisted Renato Ibarra and sealed the win with a goal of his own deep in added time in the second half.
The Mexican striker rose to the occasion when the Aguilas needed someone to step up. In the last few weeks, Club America has lost a couple of key players such as Edson Alvarez, Agustin Marchesin and Matheus Uribe, who will be playing in Europe next year. Henry Martin has been out due to an injury and Nico Castillo fractured his fibula in last night’s game, and will be out for approximately three months.
Club America took the lead in the 75th minute when Guido Rodriguez shot a missile with his right foot outside the 18-yard box to put the ball inside the net to make it a 1-0 game.
Seven minutes later, Ariel Nahuelpan stole the ball from Emanuel Aguilera and Camilo Sanvezzo took advantage of the mistake and drove the ball to the inside of the box, where he shot the ball into the top right corner to tie the game (1-1).
Dos Santos came off the bench in the 44th minute after striker Nico Castillo exited the match after suffering an injury, and was the difference-maker in Club America's win.
In the 87th minute, Dos Santos sprinted down the left side of the field, ran past defender Diego Braghieri and delivered a ground pass to Ibarra to put America up 2-1 just five minutes after Sanvezzo had leveled for Club Tijuana.
In stoppage time, Roger Martinez sent a through-ball to give dos Santos the 1-v-1 opportunity and chipped the ball over Xolos goalkeeper Gibran Lajud to score the third goal of the game.
The Mexico international signed for the club in July 6 and still hasn’t started a game for the club, but has been getting more playing time after not having a single appearance since October of 2018.
With the win, the Aguilas remain undefeated and sit in third place with seven points after three games played (2-0-1).
Club America’s next game will be on Sunday, August 11, 2019 when they visit Toluca in the Nemesio Diez Stadium at 10:00 a.m. (PST).
