Sparks defeat Mercury 84-74 on Pat Summitt tribute night

The Los Angeles Sparks honored Pat Summit by getting a win and defeating the Phoenix Mercury 84-74.

Pat Summitt was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and passed away in 2016. She won eight NCAA championships as coach of the Tennessee Volunteers women’s basketball team.

The Sparks took a 25-15 lead in the first quarter with Nneka Ogwumike leading the way with 10 points. The Sparks extended their lead to 12 points at halftime and held the Mercury to only 32 points.  They carried that momentum for the rest of the game making 43.5% of their three point shots.

Nneka Ogumike led the Sparks with 24 points and 7 rebounds. Candace Parker added 12 points and 11 rebounds of her own.

Brittney Griner led the Mercury with 27 points and 14 rebounds in the loss. 

Diana Taurasi hasn’t played a game all season but she managed to get a technical foul in the first quarter for arguing a non foul call. Taurausi is recovering from a back injury that required surgery and her return to the court is currently unknown.

The Sparks next game is on Sunday at home versus the Chicago Sky.
