LOS ANGELES, CA- The last preseason game for the Chargers finished yesterday with a 27-24 against the San Francisco 49ers. A victory is always nice to see as a football fan but in preseason it’s the individual victories I keep my eyes on. A lot of players are on the “roster bumble” going into Thursday matchup and it showed. Only 53 players are able to be signed on the official roster and there is competition up and down the roster. The QB3, RB3, WR4-5 and DL position is where the biggest questions mark circled around this roster. Also it was nice to see rookie Nazir Adderley getting a interception on his first preseason game.
Assuming Melvin Gordon is holding out, as I said before, the Chargers are in good hands with Austin Ekeler, Justin Jackson and the third RB yet to be determined. The RB that are in the running for the last spot is Troymaine Pope, Derrick Gore, and Detrez Newsome. Newsome was a lock but Pope and Gore are making a run for his money. Pope leads the preseason with 94 yards on 20 attempts averaging 4.7 yards per carry, Impressive camp and if Gordon is to hold out I can see both Newsome and Pope making the roster.
The third QB position is in the hands of HC Anthony Lynn, which he has to chose between Cardale Jones and Rookie 6th Round pick Easton Stick. Both have performed well throughout each other camps so the decision is gonna be hard. Stick has shown flashes during the first three preseason games, rated the highest QB rating in the preseason with 70, but he wasn’t so great. In the last preseason game vs the 49ers. Stick, who entered in the 3rd quarter, only completed 3/6 for 22 yards and 2 INTs. He has a total of 4 INT this preseason with only 1 TD.
At the receiving end of things, the Chargers have the first 3 WR locked in. The players that are on the bubble are Attravis Scott, Germany Davis, Dontrelle Inman, and Andre Patton. Scott led the team this preseason with 188 yards on 12 receptions, and right behind him is Patton with 86 yards on 6 receptions and 2 TD. I think it is between the two or maybe even both get signed to the roster.
All together this is the most difficult decision for the HC each year, cutting the roster to 53 players. Some players face the biggest part of there career making a roster on an NFL team. I personally believe that the coaching staff will make the right decision in picking the right 53 guys to be part of the Los Angeles Chargers. If Melvin Gordon does, in fact, holds out that leaves spot open for a player willing to play. Whoever is part of this team I know will put everything they can to bring a championship to LA.
