LOS ANGELES, CA- The Los Angeles Chargers fall 0-3 this preseason, which is not the biggest concern for me. This week Chargers HC Anthony Lynn decide to sit most of his defensive starters which means the second team had to show what they are made of. The second team had a big challenge ahead versus a very physical, run-heavy offense. The run game came in heavy all game totaling up almost double of the Chargers total yards of 185. Also, all the Seattle touchdowns came from the ground. This is a problem the Chargers need to fix sooner than later before the season starts.
Three games into preseason and the 53-man roster to begin to take form. With most starters out both on offense and defense gave other players opportunities to make plays and prove to the team they are worthy to be on the 53-man roster. A player that is on the roster bubble is DE Chris Peace. Peace is in a heated competition with other players like Isaac Rochell, Dee Liner, Cortez Broughton, and T.Y McGill. Chris Peace made his coaches remembered his name by recording a sack in last night's game.
Another competition that is interesting to see is the WR one. The starters are set with Allen, Williams, and Benjamin but the 4th spot is up for grabs. The receivers fighting for that spot are Attravis Scott, Andre Patton and newly signed Dontrelle Inman (former Charger). Inman played with the Chargers back in 2016 but riddled with injuries and end up getting traded to the Colts last year. Well, Inman is back and the fact Philip Rivers played a big part in Inman reunion is convincing me that he will get that 4th WR spot. Andre Patton and Attravis Scott are also candidates to get the last WR spot. Patton caught a TDs in back to back preseason games which are good but that was his only catch in the game. Scott had the most receiving yards in the game with 66 yards on 4 catches. It's going to come down to the last game to determine who will win it out.
The 3rd string QB situation is getting close as will between Stick and Jones. I like Stick for a couple of reasons: 1. Younger 2. Room to improve 3. Very mobile in the pocket and 4. Flashes of greatness so far. Jones is much older and can’t keep up with the fast past of the Chargers offense. I really can’t wait to see Stick on the field full-time behind Rivers and Taylor in the future.
All in all the Chargers have a lot of things to be proud of but also a lot of things to improve. The record shows 0-3 but that doesn’t show the heart each player put out on the field. One more game to go which means one last chance for the players to prove they can be on an NFL roster. It’s going to be a great year and with the right 53 players, the Chargers can really make a run into a deep playoff run and even the Super Bowl.
