The Sacramento River Cats defeated the El Paso Chihuahuas 9-3 Thursday in a series-opening win. The Chihuahuas led 3-2 in the fifth inning before Sacramento’s seven unanswered runs.
Austin Allen went 1-for-4 with a solo home run, his 20th of the season, joining Michael Gettys and Ty France as Chihuahuas players to hit 20 or more dingers. El Paso infielders Matthew Batten and Peter Van Gansen relieved the bullpen for the evening with a scoreless inning each.
El Paso starter Emmanuel Ramirez struck out a career-high nine batters through five innings. The River Cats hit five home runs on Thursday, including three in the seventh inning. The win moved Sacramento’s magic number to four in a pursuit to clinch the Northern Division.
The loss for El Paso pushes them two games back of the Las Vegas Aviators with just 11 games to go.
