Chargers escape week 4 with a victory against a Jimmy G- less 49ers. You would think that the Chargers would run away with a win but the final score was close 29-27. With a poor performance from K Caleb Sturgis, the Chargers manage to barely win with the defense coming up when needed. Antonio Gates also was a big part of the Chargers victory catching his 119th TD of his career.

It was a rough start for Rivers and the Chargers. On the first drive of the game Rivers overthrown Keenan Allen straight to the defense that led to a pick six. Phillip then rebound and didn’t throw another pick and ended the game with 250 yards on 25/39 passing with 3 TD. One of Rivers TD was a dime over a mismatched LB to RB Austin Ekeler that been more of a wideout then RB, 3rd on the team with 163 yards and 2 TD. The second TD from Rivers was to his go to TE THE GOAT A. Gates who was wide open on a 3rd and goal late in the 1st quarter. The 3rd TD was to his very reliable option of Melvin Gordon also on a 3rd down and also tied with 3 receiving TD on the season. Another notable performance was from WR Tyrell Williams who had a SC Top 10 helmet catch over double coverage which was very impressive.

The only bad thing the Chargers took from this win is the poor performance from K Caleb Sturgis. If your a Charger fan, like me, you know that Special Teams has been a big problem in the past for LA. It continues Sunday with Sturgis missing 2 extra points and a FG. Lucky for LA it didn’t come back to bite them later in the game. The Chargers also had a flash of a Special Teams play that the Chargers haven’t seen in a while with KR Desmond King had a nice 56 yard return that was one miss tackle away from a TD.

The defense FINALLY came in clutch when needed this Sunday with a INT from a batted pass to DT Isaac Rochell, which was his first career INT, less than 3 minutes in the game that sealed the win for LA. Rookie S Derwin James stays shining with another sack which makes 3 on the season, leads team, who is matching people's expectations. Another defensive stop was from CB Trevor Williams that had a 86 yard INT return who only had one man to beat for a pick six. Overall the defense came in clutch when needed but also allowed 41% on 3rd down conversions which is an improvement from last weeks 50%.

2-2 isn't the greatest record going into week 5 but it's much better then 0-4 which was LA’s record last year this time of the year. Defense isn’t as dominant as it was last year but I believe it’s due to the new faces and absent of Joey Bosa. Once Bosa is back in the lineup and the rookie get in a groove I see this Chargers defense finishing top 10 at the end of the season. The one thing I'm uncertain of is the future of K Caleb Sturgis, missing the kicks he has this year I don’t see him lasting any longer. If the Chargers can get more help from special teams win will come a lot easier. Overall the Chargers came out with a dub but face a division rival Raiders that got their first win of the season in a OT thriller against Browns.
