Former Lakers Forward Luol agreed to a one year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves and a contract buyout with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Deng’s buyout with the Lakers cost them team $7.5 million. The buyout left him with $29 million for the two years left on his contract, for which the Lakers used the waive and stretch provision to soften the short-term salary-cap hit.
His decision to want out of Los Angeles and a chance to be productive and play more meaningful minutes elsewhere contributed to this decision.
He know joins his former coach Thibodeau he played 10 seasons for while in Chicago (2004-2014) and a Minnesota team that finished eighth in the Western Conference before being bounced out by the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors in five games. Coach Thibodeau may look to utilize Deng to help back his two wings Jimmy Butler & Andrew Wiggins.
Deng signed a four-year, $72 million free-agent deal with the Lakers in 2016. The Lakers played Deng in just one game this past season.
