The Los Angeles Sparks (19-13) defeated the New York Liberty 74-66 on Tuesday night. They trailed 44-38 at the half and used a huge second half to mount their comeback outscoring the Liberty 36-22.
They were able to sustain the big first half from Liberty's All-Star Tina Charles who scored 16 of her 21 points in that half. The Sparks big three Chelsea Gray, Candace Parker, and Nneka Ogwumike combined for 60 of the team's 74 total points.
Gray led all scorers with 26 points (11-20 fg) and she also had a game high 5 assist. She has been unquestionably one of the leaders for this year's Sparks team. Ogwumike also had a 20+ performance scoring 20 points (9-19 fg) and grabbing 8 rebounds, she said in a post game interview that "we always play well when it's the three of us playing well and it makes everyone else around us better." Parker the leader of this team had a double-double with 14 points and the game high 10 rebounds.
The Liberty who are now just 7-24 on the season were led by their All-Star Tina Charles who scored 21 points on 9-18 shooting but just 5 in the second half. The Sparks did a better job bottling up Charles in the second half throwing multiple bodies at her and giving her different looks.
Kia Vaughn chipped in with 11 points and Bria Hartley had 10 points off the bench. This is the Liberty's second close lost to the Sparks in the last week they fell at home on August 8th 82-81. They now travel to Las Vegas to take on the Aces in their final game of the season. The Sparks travel to the Nation's capital to take on the Mystics.
Next Game: Friday 8/17 @ Mystics 4:00 PT.
