The New Orleans Pelicans (43-30) erased an 11 point deficient in the fourth quarter to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 128-125. The Pelicans are currently in the fourth seed in the Western Conference and a loss would have pushed them back to sixth. This win keeps the momentum going for the Pelicans and keeps their steak alive at four. They swept the season series against LA 3-0.
The Pelicans and Lakers played a pretty evenly matched game until the Lakers created fourth quarter (108-97) separation that ultimately the Pelicans overcame to get the win. The Pelicans were led by their monster Anthony Davis who scored 33 points and grabbed a team high 9 rebounds.
The Pelicans backcourt controlled the game as Jrue Holiday and Rajon Rondo combined for 50 points and 16 assist. They almost had as many assist as the entire Lakers team (19).
The Lakers (31-40) played well and probably should have won this game with ease. They were a plus 33 from three but that obviously didn’t translate into the win. They had four players score 22 plus points led by the efficient shooting by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (8-11) from three, scoring a total of 28 points. Julius Randle and Brooke Lopez each scored 23 points and Randle pulled down 10 boards to go with it. Kyle Kuzma added 22 points.
Rookie guard Lonzo Ball who has struggled as of late scored 6 points but did grab a game high 13 rebounds and dished out 9 assist. He has struggled from three in his past two games shot just 3-19. He has to become more consistent if the Lakers are to ever take the next step.
The Lakers have now lost four straight and are everything but officially eliminated from the playoffs. They would have to probably win out to even have a chance. The Pelicans are a team fighting for home-court in the first round, and they played like it.
