Coach Doc Rivers and the new look Los Angeles Clippers took the court in Honolulu, Hawaii for their first preseason against the the Sydney Kings. They defeated the Kings 110-91 on Sunday night.
This is the first time in Coach Rivers tenure as Clippers head coach that his team took the floor without All-Stars Chris Paul who departed for the Houston Rockets in free agency a year ago, Blake Griffin who was traded midway through last season to the Detroit Pistons, & Deandre Jordan who signed with the Dallas Mavericks in the off-season.
He still has some good pieces to work with in Lou Williams the reigning Sixth Man of the Year, Tobias Harris and Avery Bradley who came over in the Blake Griffin trade midway through last season, and a fearless defender in Patrick Beverley who comes back from missing most of the season after undergoing an arthroscopic lateral meniscus repair, and a microfracture procedure, on his right knee.
They also will look to get major contributions from their first round picks Shai Gilgeous the 11th pick out of Kentucky who scored 10 points in his NBA debut and Jerome Robinson the 13th pick out of Boston College who didn't much playing time last night but made his only field goal attempt.
Newly acquired Marcin Gortat who came over from the Washington Wizards where he spent the previous five seasons in exchange for Austin Rivers, will look to fill the void left by Deandre Jordan.
He had 12 points and 9 rebounds in his Clipper debut.
Overall Coach Rivers will probably have his toughest job to do as Clippers coach because he knows the three players he's had to lean on for so long (Paul, Griffin, & Jordan) are no longer there. This is now a new chapter and challenge in front of him.
